The plan to restore the San Joaquin River was ambitious. It has been ten years trying to resolve the issues of water. None of the larger channel construction has been completed and the costs have risen to1.5 billion dollars. The work will take longer than they expected. The officials are getting close to approving the first major project. This project is a bypass for fish to swim around the Mendota Pool, west of Fresno. Later this month and early October, the water released from the Fraint Dam should connect the upper San Joaquin River with the Delta and the ocean for the first time since 2011. Environmental documents have been created, permits issued, and as of last year 54,000 baby salmon had been released in the San Joaquin River as experts study how to eventually establish a self-sustaining fish population.
I believe this will create less water for farmers to use. And on top of that we are already in a drought which leaves us with less water in the first place. Farmers are not going to have enough water to irrigate their crops which will lead to crops dying. If crops are dying that is less food for the people of our society.
